Jonathan Ward at ICON has taken this ‘73 Volkswagen Type 181 “Thing” and turned it into an all electric beauty, dubbed the “Wild Thing”.
The all-new electric drivetrain, built in conjunction with Zelectric, the leading US converter of old air-cooled VWs to electric power, makes 134 kilowatts (180 HP) and 210 lb-ft of torque, a big leap in performance from the the original car’s 46 HP.
Like all of ICONs creations the attention to detail is amazing . The motor looks at home in the rear engine bay, and ICON has come up with a digital display that echoes the classic analog gauges, but includes info about the battery’s state of charge. Forty kilowatt hours of batteries take up the luggage space under the bonnet up front, while Wilwood brakes and adjustable coilovers, means the “Wild Thing” stops and handles like a modern machine.
